Tennessee (Wayne County) scored two runs in the third inning and three pitchers held the big bats of Georgia (Lee County) to just one hit in a 2-1 victory in the Dixie Majors (11-12-year-old) tournament.
The loss was the first for Georgia in the Dixie Youth World Series, leaving three teams with one loss each - Tennessee, Georgia and Auburn.
Georgia jumped on the board in the second inning as Zane Hood blasted a solo homer off Tennessee starter Caleb Keating.
Tennessee responded in the third when Nolan Sallee doubled down the right field line to score Zac Clayton with the tying run.
After two outs, Austin Rice reached on a Georgia error, allowing Canaan Smith score the go-ahead run.
From there, the Tennessee pitching took over
Dalynn Teeftaller pitched hitless innings before giving way to Rice.
Rice downed Georgia 1-2-3 in the 5th and survived a Georgia rally attempt in the bottom of the sixth.
In the sixth Georgia’s Hood and Christopher Moates walked to put the game-tying run in scoring position with just one out.
But Rice got Jarvis Cruce and Cody Allen swinging to end the game.
At the conclusion of the game, a draw was held on the field to determine which of the three teams would receive a bye into the championship game.
Georgia won the draw, meaning Auburn and Tennessee must face off at 1 p.m. today. The winner will face Georgia for the World Series crown at 8 p.m.
