The only thing missing was an exploding scoreboard.
With the game tied in the bottom of the sixth and final inning, two outs and all eyes on him, Georgia’s Cody Allen belted a 2-2 fastball off the scoreboard in center field.
The two-run home run gave the Lee County All-Stars a victory in the Majors (11-12) winners’ bracket of the Dixie Youth World Series against Florida (Callaway), 3-1.
It also presented fans with a movie-like ending in a down-to-the-wire battle.
“Unbelievable,” Georgia coach Todd Griffin said. “It was like déjà vu for us. We lost that way in the state tournament – with someone hitting a walk-off (home run) on us. It was nice to see us on the winning side this time.”
Georgia will play South Carolina (Chapin) in the quarterfinals at noon today on Field 4. A win would put them in the semifinals this afternoon against the winner of this morning’s Tennessee (Wayne County) vs. Louisiana (Morgan City).
Florida will play Auburn War Eagle in the losers’ bracket at 10 a.m. this morning on Field 6.
It is a must-win game for both teams in the double-elimination tournament.
Florida struck first with a run in the top of the first when J. Michael Davis knocked in Clint Williams for a 1-0 lead.
Georgia tied it back up with a run in the bottom of the second.
Zane Hood blasted a hit a solo home run to knot the game at 1, giving Georgia all its runs on long balls.
“Our bats weren’t that strong in the beginning,” Griffin said. “But they came alive when we needed them.”
